The Reverse Engineer
Executed a rapid reverse-engineering project for a commercial furniture factory, creating production-ready digital twins from physical samples at unprecedented speed.
Challenge
A commercial furniture client was facing a critical production bottleneck. They had secured a large order for a popular furniture line but possessed only physical master samples, with no corresponding CAD models or manufacturing drawings. Their in-house engineering team was at full capacity, and the production deadline was immovable. They needed a way to digitize their existing line at lightning speed.
Solution
We initiated our rapid reverse-engineering protocol, bypassing conventional scanning for a hands-on, research-driven approach. Our team conducted a deep dive into the principles of ergonomic chair design, performing experimental stress tests on the physical samples to understand material tolerances and structural weak points. We analyzed joint construction and assembly methods to identify opportunities for manufacturing optimization. This empirical data formed the foundation for creating fully parametric, production-ready CAD models. We built 'digital twins' not from a scan, but from a fundamental engineering understanding of the product, ensuring they were optimized for the client's specific CNC machining capabilities.
Result
Within a 72-hour sprint, we delivered a complete package of manufacturing files, including 3D models and CNC toolpaths. This allowed the client to completely bypass their internal design queue and immediately begin production. The project not only solved their immediate timeline crisis but also established a new, faster workflow for digitizing future physical samples, showcasing our role as an agile, high-speed engineering partner for established manufacturers.
