What a Fractional Engineer Actually Does
July 15, 2026
We describe Sebar Design as a fractional engineering team, and the most common follow up question is what that actually means. Fair question. Here is the straight answer.
The short version
You get senior mechanical engineering and product design when you need it, without hiring a full time team. For most early hardware companies, a full time engineer is not affordable or necessary yet. The work comes in bursts: a design push, a prototype round, a manufacturing handoff. Fractional fits that pattern.
What we do
- Turn an idea and a brief into CAD that can actually be built.
- Run simulation where it matters, like FEA for strength and CFD for heat and airflow.
- Plan prototype rounds and spell out what each one is supposed to prove.
- Prepare drawings, BOMs, and files a manufacturer can quote from.
- Help you find manufacturers and talk to them in their language.
What we do not do
Being clear about this up front saves everyone time.
- We do not manufacture in house. We help you get it made, but production happens at a partner facility.
- Prototype costs are separate from our engineering fees. You pay the shop that builds the part.
- We do not replace your judgment on the business. We will tell you if a design decision is going to hurt your unit cost, but the product and the market are yours.
How it works day to day
We sign an NDA before you share anything sensitive. We work remotely with clients across the country, and everything is delivered digitally: CAD files, drawings, and simulation reports a manufacturer can use.
We also keep you in the loop. Every project has a clear record of what happened, what is next, and what is blocking us. If we are waiting on you, you will know. If you are waiting on us, you will know that too.
Who it is right for
Founders and small companies with a real product idea who need engineering depth but are not ready to build an engineering department. If that sounds like you, we would like to hear about it.
